OpenCanvas test: Maggie by Lady-of-Link OpenCanvas test: Maggie by Lady-of-Link
um, a possible solution to my loss of adobe? I'm not familiar with the program, and this is my very first picture I made using Open Canvas1.1 Maggie the white mage was my poor victim.

I'm not sure if I should continue the SSBOC series using this program though, because I don't like how the picture came out.....and I don't have enough time to learn how to make decent pictures with it.

anyway, this program is small,(and free) and my friend doesn't mind if I use this on her computer at times while mine is gone.

actually....I owe much thanks to ~JonnyBlackmage who helped me out a ton yet again :smooch: he was kind enough to send me some files back when I ran out of room to store things. I would have lost this (as well as many other image/Flash files) if he didn't

so everyone give him a hug today  yay!..

White mage and Final Fantasy are (c) to Square/Square-enix

well the hood that Garnet has on in FFIX is based off of the classic White mage look, so guess that's OK ;P

thank you!

...Darn, the comment I made didn't make it!

But I am glad I used my laptop's wireless internet that day, since I couldn't go to the library on Veterans Day. (To all the Military Veterans, :salute: ) If I didn't do it, then this wouldn't have come to be (or it would've been late. ^^; ), so I'm glad to be of help. :salute:

This is the first Open Canvas work, huh? Well you did a very beautiful job on the pic! Maggie is still beautiful and this art style looks like something out of an anime, which is really great! :w00t!:

It's an instant :+fav: and you did a very wonderful job!  :+fav:

Now for my massive hugging and glomping!

I am very glad you did to :D I would have hated to lose so much pictures that were only half done (plus the BtGS dress up game)

so you like how open canvas looks? It wasn't that hard to do this, I think the hardest part was the white....then again, white is always hard for me.

aww :smooch: thank you and thank you again! I am glad you like it!!

I'm glad my mind told me to use the internet at such a convienient time. :aww: Had I not done it on that day, I'd probably scream at myself, cry, punch and kick myself, have tea for a bit, punch and kick myself more, realize that I still need to brush my teeth and do so, wrestle myself more, and then sleep.

But seeing that I don't have much tears anymore and it's impossible to properly kick myself, I can't do much of that anyway and just be all whiny...

Well I'm just trying Open Canvas on my laptop (a trial version, unfortunately... :p ), and I like it a bit better than Photoshop, but it would be better if I used a mouse on the program... :XD:

So try Open Canvas some more, you might find things might look even greater than back in Photoshop.

I do and-- :jawdrop: SMOOCHED AGAIN!!! :faint:

aww...there is no need to beat yourself up! so what if you couldn't save and send it back to me, at least it was saved somewhere for me to get one day.

I gave it one more shot, that took awhile to do (most of Sunday and Yesterday) and I'll post it up soon.

actually, I don't mind open canvas...it's just my version is OpenCanvas1.1 and is old....even worse is that I don't have a font plug-in and all the words look like this: #$^*$%(S)

...so my open canvas is swearing at me all the time....thankfully I can guess how to add a new layer....and save, so that's all I need to know for now.

yes :aww: smooched again :giggle:

Yeah, that's what I decided after all is said and done. But earlier IS better... :XD:

If I try the program with a better mouse, or perhaps get the real version, I'll unlock it's full potential.

Ah, older versions can be a hassle. I have an old version of Flash on my regular computer and each time I open your flash files, the flash seems to break into pieces somehow. (I had to watch your glomping flash on the laptop... the messages actually show up on the laptop and not on my computer :-X )

...Potty software. :XD: Well as long as you know the basics, you'll be in good shape. ;)

what kind of mouse do you use? I use a Logitech optical mouse. it was cheep and it works out pretty well for me. plus just about any computer is compatible with it. even my old piece of junk.

well this version of Open Canvas is the only thing I wanted to install on my friends computer, because it's the smallest file size. it's hard to deal with older programs, but once you learn you can do just fine with them

...after all I use a program called Adobe Photoshop Elentents 2.0 most of the time, and that's pretty darn old by now!.

but I can see the problems that would happen because of diffrent Flash programs.

 now I was smooched!

Well for the laptop, it's the built-in finger sensitive mouse, plus I do have a wireless mouse, but it's hard to coordinate when they're seperate. :-X I don't know the brand, but it's either Logitech or Dell. I'll check back when I'm home... :XD:

I see, so it's the file size...

I never used PS Elements, just Photoshop itself and (used to) Illustrator.

Yeah... but small problems...

I return the smooch... :aww:

I tried that motion sensitive thing back when I was in college once ^^; the results were disastrous...

actually, elements is not made for makeing images from scratch, it's meant for photos.....which is why it doesn't have that great features to it ;P

I won't be able to make a tutorial until after Thanksgiving break, but I can give you some tips.

Blurry brushes are your friend. There's a circle button on the tool options that'll make your watercolor brush soft or hard edged.

I use the ink for lines, unless going to an odd effect.

For shading, you can either use another layer set to multiply (which merely darkens the original color, good for bright/colorful stuff, or greyscale. Highlights need to be taken out of the color layer.), or make a color gradient and do it on the same layer (good for lighting effects and such)

I personally shade on the same layer, and use the different layers for overlapping things. I always use a different layer for hair.

My layers, from bottom to top, are: Sketch, Skin, Clothing, Hair, Ink.
My order I work on the layers in is Sketch, Ink, Skin (color/shade), Clothing (color/shade), Hair (color/shade), erase sketch.

If I still feel like perfecting it more, I'll hide the Ink layer and make it so all the colors meet under the lines. With Ink masked, I'll also define the shading more so you can tell what it is without the lines.

There's an option on layers to do stuff like reverse the colors of a layer and such. After finishing, I usually mess with that just to see what it looks like, for kicks. X3

Also try just drawing something on a few layers. Scribbles work. Then go around and push all the buttons and find out what everything does.

well like I said before, only if you have the time to!

what version of OpenCanvas do you use? I want to see if I can download a trial of the version if you ever do get a tutorial posted.

I always use loads of layers with anything I draw, but it seams you use less for some things....I'm going to give that a try and see what comes out :D

 thank you so much for all the tips and advice!!

well, the program I used is just so diffrent, and has none of the features I am used to....so to me the picture just isn't that good looking ^^;

she looks older because the sketch was originally going to be Princess Zelda, but I couldn't get the the shoulder armor and hair ornaments right, so I gave up and changed it to Maggie the White mage
